The first issue of Der Spiegel

The German news magazine with the highest circulation is founded

Hitting the streets on 4 January 1947, the print run of the first issue of the magazine Der Spiegel was limited by paper shortages. It soon overcame this early teething trouble and developed into a mass circulation weekly. Under the editorship of Rudolf Augenstein, the magazine established the “Spiegel Statute”, which obliged editors to check all reports scrupulously, thereby setting the standard for the West German news media.
